Councillors in Stockport are calling for a new policy to control the type of shops on a busy high street, in an attempt to stop an 'excessive clustering of takeaways, vape shops and barbershops.'
The plan is focused around Castle Street in Edgeley, based near Stockport town centre and the borough's main train station.
Concerns are growing that traders on the street are struggling to survive and need more support from the town hall, including a new long-term strategy for the area.
A motion has been put down to discuss the issues at a council meeting at Stockport town hall next week.
This states: 'Like many High Streets, Edgeley faces significant challenges, including changes in retail patterns, vacant premises, the need for public realm improvements, and the requirement to adapt to new expectations around accessibility, sustainability, and public and community use.
'Women and vulnerable pedestrians report going out of their way if possible, to avoid using the district centre at all times of day due to perceptions of safety and embedded anti-social parking issues.'
Ideas to improve the street include a new class control policy for the Edgeley district centre, to be included in Stockport's local development plan.

Other suggestions have been put forward to have an outline draft of a regeneration strategy to be ready within six months, and calling Stockport council to 'reaffirm its commitment to supporting the long-term vitality and sustainability of all District Centres across the borough.'
In September, councillors in Edgeley said Castle Street is facing an uncertain future.
This followed concerns about the impact of major engineering works at the Greek Street Bridge, which has led to road closures close to the high street due to last until spring 2026.
Cllr Asa Caton said: "We speak to traders, we know they're struggling, the next six months is going to continue to be difficult."
Data from Stockport council showed more people are visiting the area, with footfall rising by 1 per cent from April to June 2025 compared to the same time last year.
The council's report also found that shop vacancy rates in Edgeley are the 'lowest' of Stockport's district centres across the borough.
Councillors will discuss the future of Castle Street during a meeting on October 9.
