Council leader Mark Hunter praises Stockport's 'extraordinary transformation' and calls for Metrolink in final statement

Stockport Council leader Mark Hunter is stepping down on 20 May.
He has released a final statement, where he expressed 'immense pride' at the transformation of Stockport, and set out what he'd like to see in future - namely, a Metrolink service in Stockport.
"Serving this remarkable borough has been the privilege of a lifetime", Cllr Hunter said.
He also said it was 'incredible' to see how far Stockport has come; "We've rebuilt our town centre from the ground up, turning what was once a struggling retail core into a vibrant, modern hub filled with culture, commerce, and opportunity.
"Our borough has become a model for regeneration – not just in Greater Manchester, but across the country. [...]
"And we've changed perceptions - of ourselves and of our place in Greater Manchester. Stockport is now seen as confident, forward-thinking, and on the rise."

Closing off his statement, Cllr Hunter called for a Metrolink service to Stockport.
"A tram stop at the heart of our borough would be transformative – not just for connectivity to the south of Manchester, but for our ambition.
"It would unlock jobs, boost investment, reduce emissions, and help more people access all we have to offer.
"At present, too many people are missing out on all we have to offer – whether it's our bustling town centre, our rich cultural life, or the economic opportunities we've created."

Stockport Council will officially appoint a new leader and deputy leader on 20 May.
The new leader of the council will be Cllr Mark Roberts, and the new deputy leader will be Cllr Jilly Julian.
Stockport's Liberal Democrat group (the largest party in the council) elected them both after Cllr Mark Hunter announced that he would be stepping down from his role as leader in March.
Cllr Mark Roberts will be stepping up from his former role as deputy leader of the council.
Cllr Jilly Julian is currently the council's cabinet member for finance and resources.
