Construction on new Stockport fire station to start soon, with contractor appointed

Firefighters in Stockport are one step closer to moving into a new station, with a contractor now appointed to build the new site.
Construction company Seddon will be building the new fire station on King Street West - it's the same site as the old fire station, which will be demolished to make way for the new one.
It's due to open in Autumn 2026.
In the meantime, Stockport fire crews will be temporarily based from Whitehill Station in Reddish.
The new station will be slightly smaller in size, for greater 'operational efficiency' - however, it would uphold the same level of service to local communities in Stockport.
Response times will neither increase nor decrease, and likewise with the number of engines. Crew size would also remain broadly similar.

Plans for the King Street station were unveiled in summer 2022, and a consultation with local residents was held in June 2023.
The construction of the new station was delayed when the lead contractor went into administration.
However, GMFRS has said it has 'worked hard' to get the new station 'back on track'.
The new station will include state-of-the-art facilities, as well as a room which local community groups and organisations can use.

It's estimated to cost around £6m, part of a £38m investment from the Greater Manchester Combined Authority across fire stations in the region.
Indeed, as well as Stockport, there will also be new stations in Bury and Blackley.
In a statement on social media, Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said: "This exciting development is an investment in our people, our communities, and the future of Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service.
"The station will provide improved facilities for our crews, a new space for local community activities and low-carbon heating and lighting systems in support of Greater Manchester's ambition to become a carbon neutral city-region by 2038."
