People in Stockport are warning that someone could be seriously hurt at an 'incredibly dangerous' junction unless urgent action is taken.

The junction at Booth Street and Shaw Heath is often busy with traffic as motorists navigate around the Greek Street bridge which closed six months ago and won't reopen until spring 2026 due to Network Rail engineering works.

Traffic lights on the roads are operating in a way that means cars from Shaw Heath or Booth Street are flowing at all times in one direction or the other, with vehicles turning through the junction.

A councillor is calling for temporary lights with a crossing to make it easier for pedestrians to get across.

Resident Andrew Burton said the junction is causing safety problems and needs sorting.

"If someone with mobility issues, someone elderly, disabled, a child, were to cross slowly, and not realise that traffic from the direction opposite to the one which is stationary and held, is actually given right of way.

"Therefore, there is a very real possibility that they would be hit by a vehicle. I have seen many pedestrians come very close to being hit in this manner."

Part of the problem is that cars from Booth Street are turning right onto Shaw Heath due to the Greek Street Bridge closure, and motorists coming the other way are turning left.

That means cars aren't in each other's way when moving, but they are still being held at red lights.

"Divers see that they are being held unnecessarily, they are ignoring red lights and driving through which makes it even more dangerous," Mr Burton added.

"If the appropriate changes are not put in place, there is a very real risk of injury, serious injury, or even death for pedestrians."

Matt Wynne is a councillor in Edgeley and said the issue has been going on for months without a fix being made.

"It really is shocking that after six months into the [Greek Street bridge] project this issue still has no resolution.

"Temp signals with a crossing with a ped push button option was promised but has never materialised.

"We have already had a serious road traffic collision adjacent to the work site in recent months and there has been a pedestrian attitude from the local authority.

"Although the railway construction side of things has gone well, the wider highways mitigation efforts have been quite poor overall and has been left to the ward councillors to run round chasing updates."

Stockport council said it is monitoring the situation and urged people to report any instances of red-light running to Greater Manchester Police (GMP).

Cllr Grace Baynham, the cabinet member for parks, highways and transport services, said: "The Greek Street project is a once-in-a-generation investment to improve safety, accessibility, and connectivity in Stockport.

"Edgeley is very much open for business throughout these works, and we would like to thank the community and businesses for their patience and support as our partners deliver these vital improvements for Stockport's future.

"The signal arrangements for pedestrians at the Shaw Heath/Booth Street junction remain the same as what was provided prior to the start of the Greek Street works.

"Together with our partners, Network Rail, TfGM [Transport for Greater Manchester] and Murphys, we continue to monitor traffic and site conditions to balance the needs of residents, businesses, and the wider public.

"For everyone's safety, we'd also encourage that any instances of drivers going through red lights are reported to 101, or, where video footage is available, submitted online to GMP for consideration."

A Network Rail spokesperson said: "Replacing the Greek Street bridge is an essential, once-in-a-generation investment to make road and West Coast Main Line rail journeys more reliable through Stockport for the next 120 years.

"We have worked alongside Stockport Council and TfGM at every step to ensure the traffic management during the year-long closure of the roundabout safely serves the local community, road users and local businesses.

"We are grateful to the people of Stockport for their patience throughout this important project."
