Stockport's new landmark travel interchange in the town centre is taking shape as work continues in earnest.
The distinct oval design of the building is visible, and the accompanying block of 196 residential apartments has similarly made impressive progress.
Work began on the bus interchange and residential building in August 2021, following the demolition of the old bus station on the banks of the Mersey.
The new bus station is expected to be completed in spring 2024. It will accommodate 168 buses per hour across 18 bus stands, and will completely change the face of the town centre.
"This iconic 10,000 sqm regeneration scheme will be covered by a remarkable 2-acre landscaped park and connected to a newly opened up area of the River Mersey, creating an accessible riverside area open to the public", according to a statement on the Stockport Mayoral Development Coporation (MDC) website.
This rooftop park will bring new green space to the town centre, and a piece of artwork has been commissioned for completion by artist Tim Ward.
A new bridge, lifted into place in February, will link the interchange to the railway station and the Stockport Exchange commercial hub.
Room is also being left for a Metrolink stop, should plans for a tram service to Stockport materialise in the future.
Liberal Democrat councillor Colin MacAlister spoke of the efforts made in town centre development projects to leave room for Metrolink - read more about Stockport Metrolink plans HERE.
The interchange is being delivered by Transport for Greater Manchester, Stockport Council, and the Greater Manchester Combined Authority, in conjunction with contractor Willmott Dixon. The apartments are being built by their residential partner City Rise.
It is one part of the £1 billion transformation project known as Town Centre West, driven by the MDC.
Stockport 8, a new, green, fully walkable neighbourhood with retail and residential space is another part of this same project - read more about Stockport 8 HERE.
In total, the MDC plans to deliver up to 4,000 new homes and one million sq ft of new employment space over the next 15 years, in a grand project of regeneration for Stockport.
