'Brave' police dog who helped tackle crime in Stockport retires
By Alasdair Perry 27th Apr 2026
A 'brave' police dog who helped fight crime in Stockport and Greater Manchester has retired.
PD Bren - a German Shepherd - showed 'extraordinary' loyalty and bravery and helped make dozens of significant arrests in his eight-year career.
Even on his final shift, PD Bren helped protect his handler PC Oram in a 'critical' moment when a detainee tried to escape.
Bren re-detained the man, who had assaulted both PC Oram and his colleague in the process of trying to escape.
PD Bren joined Greater Manchester Police (GMP) in 2018, as a 10-month-old puppy.
Handler PC Oram quickly noticed that Bren loved to jump; "He was always bounding in the air", PC Oram said.
"Now he is eight, I'm glad he can rest his joints."
PD Bren was also excellent at tracking. As PC Oram adds: "Thanks to him, countless individuals were found in some of the most difficult surroundings and weather conditions."
The duo quickly developed a rapport, and PC Oram was named GMP Dog Handler of the Year in 2024.
In that year, the pair made a whopping 48 arrests.
After his eight-years of impressive service, PD Bren can now look forward to a comfortable retirement as a family dog.
"Bren will continue to live with me now he has retired," PC Oram said. "He will be able to focus on being a family dog and enjoy caravan holidays.
"He is great with people when off-duty, but when called upon, switched instantly to knowing what he had to do."
