Blue bin collections around Stockport will be returning to a fortnightly basis.

Stockport Council said the decision follows 'feedback received' and a review on how the current bin service is operating.

Updated bin collection calendars will be released soon, with fortnightly services expected to return ahead of Christmas 2026, when paper and cardboard recycling is tipped to increase.

In the meantime, residents should continue to follow their current collection arrangements.

The council has said returning to fortnightly collections will help residents recycle more easily - particularly since bin lids now have to be fully closed for crews to empty them. More regular services mean bins will be less likely to overflow.

Collections for paper, card and cardboard were cut to once every four weeks from May 2025, as part of the council's plan to manage pressure on its finances.

However, Stockport Council has since acknowledged that 'there is a clear opportunity to improve the service further for residents'.

Cllr Mark Roberts, Leader of Stockport Council, said: "Recycling is something Stockport residents care deeply about, and the results speak for themselves. Stockport is one of the top 10 performing recycling councils in England and the highest-performing in the North West, and we want to keep building on that success.

"We've listened carefully to the feedback we've received in recent weeks, and we recognise there is a clear opportunity for us to improve the service further for our residents. Returning blue bins to a fortnightly collection will make it easier for households to recycle more of their paper, card and cardboard and help us maintain our strong recycling performance."

Cllr Jake Austin, Cabinet Member for Housing and Environment, said: "We're announcing this now because we want to give residents plenty of notice ahead of the change and make sure everyone has the information they need.

"We're now working through the practical arrangements and will share further details over the coming weeks. 

"Updated bin calendars will be ready online in the coming weeks and delivered to households from the end of September, with further information being shared through our website and digital channels as arrangements are finalised."
