Two men have been arrested on suspicion of stealing cooking oil in Poynton.

The men were spotted 'acting suspiciously' on Dickens Lane around 4.15am on Tuesday 25 August, by Cheshire Police officers who were on patrol.

The officers pulled over and spoke to the men, and noticed a strong smell of cooking oil.

They then decided to conduct a search of the area, revealing a white Peugeot van which contained 15 drums of cooking oil.

The two men, a 35-year-old from Doncaster and an 18-year-old from Sheffield, were both arrested on suspicion of theft and remain in custody at this time.

Police Constable Barlow, of the Macclesfield Local Policing Unit, said: "Enquiries in relation to this incident are in the early stages and as part of our investigation, we're keen to hear from any local businesses who believe they may be missing any cooking oil.
