Adlington New Town plans scrapped
By Alasdair Perry 23rd Mar 2026
Plans to build a new town comprising up to 20,000 new homes in nearby Adlington have been scrapped by the UK government.
A list of seven proposed new towns has been announced by the government, with Adlington not amongst them.
It marks a 'significant victory' for campaigners, who have protested consistently since the initial shortlist was revealed last September.
Local residents opposed the plans on the grounds of potential harm to the green belt, as well as the adverse effects that an influx of additional residents could have on traffic and the capacity of local services.
They feared it would join Macclesfield and Stockport into 'one big housing estate'.
Earlier this month, protestors took to the streets of Bramhall and Hazel Grove to voice their concerns.
"Some residents insisted that 'it wasn't a problem for them', until they were told the effect 55,000 extra residents would have on both Macclesfield and Stepping Hill hospitals", said Mark Hadfield from the Supporters of the Adlington Green Belt campaign group.
A petition against the new town plans was also launched by Macclesfield MP Tim Roca, and received nearly 19,000 signatures.
However, another nearby new town - Victoria North in Manchester city centre - has been approved by the government, with around 15,000 homes planned. 430 homes already been completed with a further 550 under construction. An additional 4,800 homes are going through planning permission.
Speaking of the other new town plans, housing secretary Steve Reed said: "People want real change – homes they can afford, local infrastructure that works, and good jobs in thriving communities.
"Our next generation of new towns marks a turning point in how we build for the future.
"From the ground up, we're planning whole communities with homes, jobs, transport links, and green spaces designed together — so we can give families the security and opportunities they deserve."
