Four things to keep an eye out for in Stockport next year
It seems fair to say that 2023 has been a buoyant year for Stockport, with Town of Culture status, a string of "best places to…" accolades, and a wealth of exciting new developments.
Bolstered by a buoyant year, Stockport has lots to look forward to next year, too. Below is just a small selection…
Stockport Pyramid could become Indian restaurant
Doubtless, many Stockport residents have already heard that Stockport Pyramid - vacant since 2018 - could be set for a new lease of life as an Indian restaurant.
Restaurant chain Royal Nawaab has confirmed that it is looking to move into the building in Summer 2024, subject to a planning application.
If approved, the pyramid will be turned into a sprawling banqueting hall across multiple floors, with a 350-seat dining space, VIP areas, and events space for weddings.
Stockport Interchange completion
Any visitor to Stockport in recent months will have noticed the dizzying progress of the new travel interchange, or, as it has affectionately been dubbed, 'the tissue box'.
This new building, between the viaduct and the A6, will be completed in Spring 2024.
The interchange will feature new bus stands, a travel shop, cycle links, and 196 new residential apartments.
It has even been future-proofed for Metrolink, should a service arrive in Stockport.
The return of Krazy Races
A highlight for Stockport's 2023 must surely have been the Krazy Races soapbox event, which saw thousands flock to the town centre to watch homemade racers speed through the town centre.
The races will return on 28 July 2024. Once again, racers will take to their soapboxes and speed down from St Peter's Square, past the Plaza building and onto Mersey Square, dodging obstacles and navigating sharp turns along the way.
This year's event in May saw 15,000 spectators and 30 teams of racers. "Due to its success in 2023, Krazy Races [...] has been invited back", the organisers say.
Weir Mill completion
Stockport's much-anticipated Weir Mill development will be completed in 2024.
This £60m residential development will deliver 253 apartments, new green outdoor space, independent bars, restaurants and shops.
As well as new apartments, the mill itself is undergoing painstaking restoration, ready for conversion into a series of cutting edge new flats, which will nonetheless remain in keeping with the historic character of the building.
