With Bonfire Night fast approaching, there is a simple yet little-known rule that people transporting fireworks should know if they want to avoid significant fines.
Local car dealer group Swansway Motor Group has released a guide on the important regulations to follow when storing and transporting fireworks, as well as some tips.
Most importantly, the '50kg rule' restricts the amount of fireworks you can carry without a valid licence. Failure to follow this simple rule can result in significant fines of up to £300, points on your driving licence, and voiding of your insurance, leaving you personally liable for accident-related expenses.
Matt Springhall, aftersales director at Swansway Motor Group, said: "Bonfire Night should be a time of joy and celebration, but it's important that safety remains above all else. Not following regulations can have serious consequences, especially surrounding firework transportation and storage.
"The rule isn't about stifling celebration but protecting everyone on the road. Sometimes we forget, but fireworks are explosive materials and therefore carry an inherent risk."
Other important regulations surrounding firework storage include:
- Double check your insurance - Before buying and transporting fireworks, check that your policy covers their transport.
- Remove flammable items - Remove all combustible items from your vehicle before placing fireworks in it.
- Indoor storage - Avoid temperature-related risks by storing fireworks in a dry, cool space before your celebrations begin.
Springhall concludes: "As we prepare our Bonfire celebrations, let's keep our safety and that of our loved ones at the forefront of our minds. By taking these precautions seriously, we can ensure that Bonfire Night is a cherished and unforgettable tradition for all the right reasons."
