Stockport is among the friendliest places in the North West.

That's according to a new study by The National Conversation, which used national statistics and residents' feedback to rank how welcoming different areas in England were.

The study considered factors such as how often residents speak to neighbours, how often they feel lonely, and how well people from different backgrounds get along,

It also measured civic pride, assessing how proud residents felt of their area, how often they volunteer, and whether they take part in any civic activities.

Stockport ranked highly on all metrics, outperforming nearly every area in Greater Manchester and scoring in the top echelons of the North West overall.

Only 4.9 percent of Stopfordians said they felt lonely often, compared with the 6.6 percent national average.

Indeed, 68.2 percent of residents said they speak with their neighbours regularly, with a similarly high number of people saying they felt they belonged in their neighbourhood (63.1 percent) and that they were proud to live there (64.4 percent).

82.9 percent of locals also said that people of different backgrounds get on well in Stockport.

As for civic participation, 38.8 percent of people said they took part in civic life in 2025, and 15.8 percent volunteer at least once per month.

Compared with other areas in Greater Manchester, the only other borough to score more highly across the eight metrics was Trafford.

As for the rest of the North West, Stockport was only out-performed by Warrington, Cheshire East, Westmorland & Furness.

It also tied with Cumberland and Cheshire West & Chester.
