New padel courts to be built outside Decathlon
Four new padel courts will open soon Stockport Decathlon.
This new permanent facility will be an expansion on the existing temporary courts at Decathlon. Construction will begin before Christmas, with opening expected in early 2025.
Plans for the new facility were approved by Stockport Council in November. They were submitted by Soul Padel, a local company whose aim is "to make padel more accessible and inclusive".
The new facility will feature four canopy-covered courts and a clubhouse. Access to the temporary courts will remain open while construction takes place.
The temporary courts have already proved popular among locals, with 1,500 visitors so far, as well as free weekly Padel sessions for local schoolchildren.
Padel is a hybrid of tennis and squash - opponents face each other over a net, but the ball can be bounced off the walls.
The approval of the new courts comes not long after a separate set of courts were approved to be built at Stockport Exchange.
Mark Hewlett, CEO and Founder of Soul Padel, said he was 'thrilled' that Decathlon will be getting a permanent set of courts.
"Over the past few months, it's been inspiring to see such a diverse range of players step onto our courts, whether they're former tennis aficionados or completely new to racket sports", he said.
"Our introductory taster sessions have been incredibly popular, and with double the number of courts, we'll have much greater capacity to welcome people to meet, connect and play. This expansion will help even more of the Stockport community experience the physical, mental, and social benefits that padel offers."
