Work starts on new Stockport space designed to help vulnerable residents live independently
By Alasdair Perry 20th Mar 2026
Work has started on a new centre designed to help vulnerable residents in Stockport live more independently.
Named the 'Independent Living Hub', it will be based in Fred Perry House in the town centre and will comprise a fully-furnished, realistic home environment where adults who need it can gain experience of living more individually.
The space will allow them to explore equipment, adaptations and technology that can make everyday life easier.
This includes mobility adaptations, plus digital tools which can help more self-sustained living.
The hub itself is also fitted out with a bedroom, kitchen, bathroom, living area, and even a staircase, providing an accurate representation of a real home.
Cllr Helen Foster-Grime, cabinet member for Health, Wellbeing and Adult Social Care at Stockport Council, said: "The Independent Living Hub is a fantastic step forward for adults in Stockport.
"By creating a realistic home environment where people can see and try equipment, adaptations and technology, we're helping residents stay independent, safe and confident in their own homes for longer.
"This pioneering project has been shaped by listening to and working closely with people with lived experience, ensuring it reflects what really matters to those who will use it.
"This is about prevention, dignity and giving people real choice — and I'm proud that Stockport is leading the way."
The new hub is expected to open to the public in May.
