Spectacular Sunday is certainly the headline event for this weekend, as 60 shows and 220 artists take over the town centre. Nonetheless, a range of other events will take place, too.

Catch a potted history of music in 'Women of Note' at St George's Church, or head down to Bask for an alternative market.

Hear a little history of the evolution of music on Saturday 18 November, with the Women of Note performance at St George's Church, Buxton Road.

Featuring music from female composers throughout history, this performance comes from the St George's Singers, conducted by Neil Taylor and accompanied by Pete Durrant.

A description for this event reads: "Female composers are not rare; just rarely performed. For centuries, it was almost impossible for women composers to have their voices heard as serious musicians.

"This concert features a selection of the many choral works written by women, from the sacred monophony of Hildegard of Bingen, through the Renaissance madrigals of Aleotti, the songs of the distaff Mendelssohn and Schumann, up to the present day with works by McDowall, Panufnik and Johnson Manning."

Tickets cost £16, or £10 for students / children. Find tickets HERE.

In line with Stockport's Town of Culture status, the town centre is set for a 'bigger and better' Christmas festival this year.

'Spectacular Sunday' will take place on 19 November from 11am-5pm. More than 60 shows and 220 artists will take to the town centre, spreading festive cheer from Market Place to the Merseyway.

Victoria Nichol, Merseyway manager, described this event as 'unmissable'. "The sheer number and calibre of performers are on a scale not seen before in the town", she said.

Visitors can expect marching bands, street theatre, live music, a host of costumed actors, comedy, carnivals, and more.

A piano recital at Strawberry Studios (featuring aerial dance), a singalong at St Peter's bridge, a stall by Mr and Mrs Boon - these are just a handful of the events that visitors can look forward to.

The event is organised jointly by Stockport Council, the Merseyway Centre, Totally Stockport (famous for organising the frog trail and Krazy Races) and Global Grooves, a carnival arts organisation.
