What to expect as massive soapbox derby returns to Stockport this summer
By Alasdair Perry 25th Jan 2026
Events company Krazy Races will be returning to Stockport this summer to host a free soapbox race which promises to be 'bigger and better' than ever.
Taking place on Sunday 9 August, the event will see up to 40 teams of racers speed from St Peter's Square to Chestergate in their homemade soapboxes, powered by nothing but gravity and bravery.
They'll be competing for fastest time from top to bottom, with other points available for best soapbox design, best-dressed team, and more.
Along the way, the racers will have to negotiate perilous turns, or risk crashing into the hay bales which will be lining the route.
It'll be the third time that Krazy Races has taken over the town centre, with previous events in 2023 and 2024 attracting thousands of visitors.
The event is also being funded and supported by Totally Stockport BID.
And it'll all be in support of charity; racers will be smashing into haystacks and performing two wheel turns in the name of good local causes.
The headline charity for the event is yet to be confirmed this year, but previously it has been The Christie and Moya Cole Hospice (formerly St Ann's Hospice).
In terms of team numbers alone, this year's Krazy Races could potentially be twice as big, with 40 squad slots available compared to the 20 teams which took part in 2024.
So far, 13 have been confirmed. They are:
- North Cheshire Forestry Limited – raising funds for Fighters Against the Yellow-Legged Hornet
- Speedmate Racers – Manes Controls Ltd, raising money for Springhill Hospice
- Enigma – Dale Nightlife Ltd, raising money for Beechwood Cancer Care Centre Stockport

The organisers promised an 'unmissable' day of "thrills, spills, and soapbox mayhem".
Danny Scoffin, Head of Business at Krazy Races, said: "We are so excited to be bringing Totally Stockport Krazy Races back in 2026 after a two-year break", he said.
"The last event was incredible, with thousands turning out and nearly £20,000 raised for local charities. Since then, we've toured the country, adding new features to make the experience even better - and we can't wait to bring these to Stockport."
Cllr Micheala Meikle, Cabinet Member for Economy and Regeneration at Stockport Council, said: "Krazy Races has become one of the stand-out highlights of Stockport's event calendar, and we're delighted to welcome it back in 2026. This is Stockport firing on all cylinders and brings thousands of people into our town, boosts our local economy, gives businesses a lift, and shines a spotlight on everything Stockport has to offer.
"We'd like to thank Totally Stockport BID for funding and supporting this fantastic event, which shows what we can achieve when businesses, partners, and the council work together. Alongside our ambitious regeneration programme — from the new Interchange to Stockroom and Stockport 8 — it shows Stockport is one of the most vibrant and exciting town centres in the UK, while also raising vital funds for good causes."
