What Stockport railway station could look like following major upgrade

Local News by Ed Barnes - Local Democracy Reporter 0 minutes ago

New plans show how Stockport station could be completely transformed as part of its biggest investment in decades.

The future transformation of Stockport Railway Station promises to 'deliver the most significant improvements to the station in decades' on what is Europe's 'busiest rail line'. The scheme is being driven forward by Stockport Council and Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM).

The local authority said the new station would 'unlock the next chapter of growth for Stockport' and drive forward the town's lauded regeneration plans with a station the town can be proud of. This includes major redevelopment, a new footbridge, new station buildings, and better connections to the town centre.

The LDRS understands the final costs of the scheme will be confirmed at a later date as the scheme develops further. People are being asked to give feedback on the latest plans from October 8 to November 17.

Cllr Mark Roberts, leader of Liberal Democrat-run Stockport Council, said: "Stockport is fast becoming one of the most exciting places in the country and Stockport deserves a station that matches that confidence and momentum

"We're setting the pace for town centre regeneration, attracting investment, creating opportunities and delivering projects that are changing lives.

"Now we have the opportunity to transform one of the most important gateways into Greater Manchester and the North.

"We're already seeing unprecedented investment and regeneration across Stockport, from new homes and employment opportunities to major transport improvements, such as the arrival of Metrolink and the creation of our award-winning Interchange.

"The station is the next significant project on that journey. This isn't just about building a better station. It's about building a gateway that reflects the confidence, ambition and pride of a borough that knows where it's going and I hope everyone will take the opportunity to engage with the plans."

Cllr Grace Baynham, cabinet member for Parks, Highways and Transport Services at Stockport Council, said: "As Stockport continues to grow and attract investment, we need a station that reflects that ambition and provides a high-quality transport hub for our residents, businesses and visitors.

"We're committed to delivering a station that supports future growth, makes it easier for people to travel, and helps unlock the next chapter in Stockport's regeneration."

A masterplan released by the local authority in 2025 said: "Whilst Stockport has a relatively prosperous economy at an overarching level, there are areas within the borough where this is not the case.

"In particular, the area surrounding the station is an area of relatively poor economic performance. Edgeley and Cheadle Heath suffers from higher than average levels of deprivation, with some parts of the ward classed as amongst the top 10pc most deprived areas in the country.

"The station therefore has a role to ensure those living in neighbouring communities are able to access employment opportunities and the railways itself does not 'turn its back' on areas of most need."

The local authority is hoping the long-promised Metrolink extension into Stockport is part of the revamp with possible routes via Station Road or King Street. If this goes ahead, there is the possibility of future tram connections over time to Stalybridge, Manchester Airport, and Altrincham.
