French restaurant Bistro Marc - housed in the iconic Winter's building - officially closed after its last service on June 18.

The owners cite soaring food prices and energy bills, which have made the business no longer financially stable.

Owners Marc and Rachel said they felt 'deepest sorrow' at having to close the bistro.

In an announcement, they said: "We made it our dream to open a French Bistro in Stockport. [...] We were able to make this dream a reality, despite all the delays and the already rising costs due to Covid.

"We've had a fantastic year and then some!

"However, as hard as we have tried, we just can't continue our dream with the state of the current economic situation, especially with the rising food prices and our energy bills being five times higher now than when we opened.

"We want to thank all our wonderful customers and our amazing staff."

The Winter's building, which dates back to 1890 and began its life as a jewellers, will thus become vacant again.

Before founding the bistro, Marc had worked as an architect and also trained under the head chef at the French embassy in Washington DC.

Yet although he and Rachel might be leaving the Underbanks, memories of the bistro will remain, both in the minds of customers and in the storied history of the Underbanks.
