New ultrafast 'full fibre' broadband is becoming available for Gatley residents.

Engineers have started work on the 'once in a generation' full fibre broadband upgrade. It has given around 2,000 homes in the area access to "ultrafast broadband, with more homes set to follow. Workers are aiming to minimise disruption as work takes place.

Openreach, which maintains the UK's broadband network, describes full fibre as "the UK's most reliable broadband technology".

At current, around 4.7 million homes in the UK use full fibre. Openreach's full fibre network covers around 77,000 homes across Stockport borough.  Wider investment is also planned in Stepping Hill.

It comes not long after 'lightning fast' speeds were extended to Hazel Grove as part of the UK Government's 'Project Gigabit' scheme.

The new technology is said to be more reliable, resilient and future-proof. Faults are less likely, and speeds are fast and consistent, with sufficient capacity to meet growing data demands.

Dane Packer, a manager at Openreach, said: "Work is underway to bring ultrafast broadband to Gatley, with more than 2,000 homes and business already able to upgrade and thousands more set to follow.

"This is a major infrastructure upgrade, so you will see more of our engineers, vans and equipment out and about but we're working hard to keep disruption to a minimum.

"Wherever possible, we'll use our existing network of ducts and poles to avoid roadworks, new street furniture and disturbance. But there may be places where we need to install new poles or underground ducts because it's the only way to make sure as many premises as possible are included in the upgrade. [...]

"As our engineering build continues across the Stockport area we're determined to deliver a great service to local residents, helping people to work from home easily and build connections and opportunities in their communities."
