An investigation is underway after two 16-year-old teenage boys were killed on a railway line in Poynton.

Emergency services were called to the tracks close to Poynton Railway Station around 10.25pm on Thursday 3 July.

The two youths were pronounced dead at the scene, British Transport Police says.

Railway lines around Poynton were closed off last night while emergency services worked at the scene, with rail services resuming around 6.15am.

Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the two teenage boy's deaths remains ongoing.

Officers remain attendance at the station this afternoon, alongside Network Rail.

A British Transport Police spokesperson said: "Officers were called at around 10.10pm last night (July 3) to reports of a casualty on the tracks near Poynton railway station.

"Officers attended with paramedics. Very sadly and despite the best efforts of paramedics two people were both pronounced dead at the scene.

"The incident is not being treated as suspicious and a file is being prepared for the coroner."
