Huw Merriman, Minister of State for Transport, has provided information on planned repairs to Stockport Viaduct.

Responding to a question from Navendu Mishra MP, Mr Merriman said that some brick work repairs are planned for this year, whilst drainage repairs are scheduled for next year.

The work will be undertaken by Network Rail's structures team.

The most recent detailed inspection of the viaduct took place in 2018/19, "to ensure its continued safety and structural integrity".

Mr Mishra had asked the Department for Transport "whether [it] has made an assessment of the condition of Stockport Viaduct".

Mr Merriman responded with the aforementioned details, also saying: "Network Rail maintains a rigorous cyclical inspection process for all of its bridges and structures, which includes Stockport Viaduct."

In a post showcasing the minister's response, Mr Mishra said: "A major feat of Victorian engineering, Stockport's Viaduct is one of the biggest brick structures in the world.

"Sadly, many local residents are now concerned about its upkeep. I am committed to ensuring this iconic landmark is well-maintained."
