Train services through Stockport have started running again following major overnight disruption.

Just after midnight on Friday 9 October, an empty Northern train became stranded near Stockport Viaduct.

There was damage to the overhead wires above the railway, forcing the closure of all lines through Stockport.

Engineers from Network Rail said they repaired the damage and re-opened the lines from around 9.30am.

However, delays and cancellations are still expected as the rail network recovers from the disruption.

National Rail Enquiries has advised passengers to check their website for updates and more information.
