Stockport's Town Hall has been lit up in Israel's colours of blue and white as of 5pm, coinciding with a vigil in Manchester happening concurrently.

The aim of the gesture is to be a symbol of 'peace and solidarity'.

It comes in response to the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestinian militant groups led by Hamas.

The war began when Israel was invaded in the early hours of 7 October.

A statement from the Council reads: "The developing situation in Israel and Gaza is worrying for all of us.

"Our thoughts are with everyone affected by the conflict and any Stockport residents with families or friends who are impacted.

"As a symbol of peace and solidarity, this evening at 5pm, we will be lighting up the town hall in blue and white to coincide with the planned vigil in Manchester. Cllr Mark Hunter, Leader of Stockport Council will attend the vigil."

Similar displays are taking place across Greater Manchester. In the city centre, Manchester City Council leader Bev Craig will be speaking outside Manchester Town Hall in an event organised by the Jewish Representative Council for GM, Jewish Leadership Council and Board of Deputies for British Jews.

Other Greater Manchester councils have similarly lit their town halls in blue and white, whilst some such as Oldham will fly a peace flag instead.
