TIMELAPSE: Greek Street's year-long overhaul

Engineers have now finished the monumental task of replacing the Greek Street bridge in Stockport town centre.

Work started on the £20m project in March 2025.

It involved taking the old bridge across the railway out, and replacing it with a new structure designed to last up to 120 years.

The programme was finished on Friday 27 March 2026, just under a year after its start date.

Throughout that time the roundabout was closed to vehicle traffic - even the railway under the bridge was closed for three weeks in August as engineers worked to install the supports for the new bridge.

Traffic restrictions were lifted at 8pm on the 27th, and now the roundabout is as busy as ever.

The new structure will also be able to facilitate the use of tram-trains and will therefore 'future-proof' Stockport for the arrival of Metrolink, which has been confirmed for the future.

The bridge promises to support the 'wider transformation' of Stockport, by connecting new developments including Weir Mill, Stockport 8, and Stockport Interchange.

Some of the changes at the roundabout include:

  • New zebra crossings on the eastern and northern sides of the junction.
  • Improvements to the existing zebra crossing on the southern side of the roundabout.
  • Improvements to the pedestrian crossing on the western side.

Network Rail, which instigated and oversaw the works, has released a timelapse video showcasing the immense year-long project.

Engineers from Murphy carried out the work itself.

Cllr Mark Roberts, leader of Stockport Council, said the re-opening was "a really important moment for Stockport".

"This was essential maintenance work that couldn't be avoided, and completing it now has helped future‑proof a vital part of our transport network so it remains safe and reliable for years to come", Cllr Roberts said.

"Restoring this key route will make a real difference for residents, commuters and local businesses, and I want to thank everyone for their patience and support over the past 12 months."

"Completing this project is another step forward in our wider transport vision, strengthening connectivity and helping us build a transport network, incorporating Metrolink, that works for everyone.

Jamie Rothwell, transportation managing director at contractor Murphy, also said: "This project is testament to the expertise and collaboration between the Murphy and Network Rail team, and our supply chain partners, who all worked together to realise this complex and critical upgrade.

"We are grateful for the support received by the local community whilst we have been on site and are pleased to be able to hand back this improved and future-proofed structure which will serve the local community for many years to come."

Patrick Vallely, Network Rail's head of buildings and civils, added: "Seeing traffic running smoothly once more at Greek Street is a proud moment for us all who've been working on this project for many years.

"Replacing Greek Street bridge was a massive feat of civil engineering which has impacted people right across Stockport for over a year, so I'd like to say a huge thank you to everyone for bearing with us.

"This essential project now secures the future of this structure and will provide a safe and reliable road and railway network for decades to come."
