Therapy dog Archie wins BBC award after his 'pawsitive' impact at Woodley Primary School
By Alasdair Perry 18th Feb 2026
A golden retriever called Archie has been spreading cheer at Woodley Primary School.
Archie is a therapy dog who visits the school every fortnight, along with his owner Linda.
Together, they've had a life-changing impact on pupils at the school - particularly those with social, emotional, or mental health needs.
Already, Archie has provided comfort and happiness to a year 3 pupil who tragically lost her mum to cancer.
He's also helped encourage one year 4 student who struggle to stay in class to come to school more regularly.
In recognition of Archie and Linda's efforts, the school nominated the pair for a BBC Make a Difference Award - which they won.
During their sessions with Archie, students can read to him, or just give him some pets and enjoy his calm energy.
Nor is this the only place they've been spreading joy - Archie and Linda, as members of the Pets as Therapy Programme, have also visited Stepping Hill Hospital, plus a range of other spots across the area.
"We all get so much out of seeing Archie", said Pete Langridege, Headteacher at Woodley Primary School said.
"You can't help but smile when you see him."
Reflecting on the impact, Cllr Wendy Meikle, Cabinet Member for Children, Families and Education, said: "It's a powerful example of how tailored support can help children with emotional or special educational needs and disabilities feel more secure, connected and able to thrive."
