Changes to road and rail are coming to Stockport in 2026, which will mean travel alterations when it comes to getting around the borough and beyond.

It never hurts to plan ahead, so here are some of the works to be aware of for 2026.

Greek Street / Armoury Roundabout

Work will be continuing on the bridge on Greek Street / the Armoury Roundabout until Spring 2026.

This means that road diversions will be carrying on throughout the start of the year.

The road will re-open once the surface is re-instated over the new bridge.

United Utilities (UU) is due to start work on new projects in Stockport over the next six months, with the aim of improving the local water network.

Disruption is expected in particular from January 2026 in Bramhall, as crews look to install a 1000m3 underground tank near Bramhall Precinct.

It means the Village Square car park will be closed for around 12 months while works take place.

The other areas UU is carrying out work are:

  • A 500m3 underground storage tank will be built at Cheadle Golf Club, designed to improve water quality in the Micker Brook. It's expected to be complete by the end of 2026.
  • 16,700m3 of new storm tanks will be created at Stockport wastewater treatment works. Initial work is due to start in 2026, with completion earmarked for 2028.
  • A 320m3 tank will be built at Lumb Lane. Work is set to start in February 2026 and will take up to 12 months to complete.
  • And in Stockport town centre, a 650m3 storage tank will be built near Hope Street, which will improve water quality into the River Mersey. Work is expected to start in Spring and be completed by the end of 2028.

Manchester Piccadilly station to close for one week

Manchester Piccadilly will be partially closing for one week in February 2026 so that 'once in a generation' upgrades can be carried out.

From Saturday 14 until Sunday 22 February, stations one to 12 will be closed while signalling and track repairs take place to the south of the station, along the Ardwick Corridor.

Although platforms 13 and 14 will remain open for limited westbound services, there will be no services stopping at Piccadilly from the south and east of the city.

Services normally running to and from Manchester Piccadilly will terminate at other stations, including Stockport.
