United Utilities (UU) is due to start work on new projects in Stockport over the next six months, with the aim of improving the local water network.

The water company will be investing £80 million into new storage tanks across the borough, which will reduce pressure on storm overflows during pressure from heavy rain.

Storage tanks can temporarily hold excess water during heavy rain, which can then be released in a controlled manner in future.

UU will be building more than 19,000 cubic metres of storage at five sites across the borough:

  • A 500m3 underground storage tank will be built at Cheadle Golf Club, designed to improve water quality in the Micker Brook. It's expected to be complete by the end of 2026.
  • 16,700m3 of new storm tanks will be created at Stockport wastewater treatment works. Initial work is due to start in 2026, with completion earmarked for 2028.
  • A 1000m3 underground tank will be built near Bramhall Precinct, as part of work on the Briarlands Close combined sewer overflow. It is due to start in January 2026 and will take up to 12 months to complete.
  • A 320m3 tank will be built at Lumb Lane. Work is set to start in February 2026 and will take up to 12 months to complete.
  • And in Stockport town centre, a 650m3 storage tank will be built near Hope Street, which will improve water quality into the River Mersey. Work is expected to start in Spring and be completed by the end of 2028.

Chris Borradaile, wastewater director for United Utilities, said: "We're working at pace right across the region to deliver the largest investment in the wastewater network for a century.

"These five projects in Stockport will make a real difference to water quality in both the River Mersey and Micker Brook."

Cllr Peter Crossen, Conservative councillor for Bramhall South & Woodford, said: "After the significant flooding events of recent years, I warmly welcome this investment in upgrading the storm overflow network across the borough.

"With regard to the works taking place in my own ward, I am calling on the council to take all appropriate measures to minimise the impact of the 12 month precinct car park closure on businesses in Bramhall Village Centre, and to ensure that residents and visitors continue to enjoy a smooth and positive experience throughout the duration of the works."
