The Stockport-ist movement - top local artists to feature in special town centre exhibition
It is a commonly-held belief that artists do not develop in a vacuum - rather they are shaped by a rich culture of influences (despite what the Romanticists will tell you).
A special exhibition is due to take place in Stockport to celebrate this local artistic culture - specifically, the 'movement' of artists practicing in and around Stockport.
'Stockport is Rising' will feature works from five local artists, to be on display at Stockport's War Memorial Art Gallery from 23 February to 31 March.
The exhibition will showcase the shared 'muse' of the artists - that is to say the architecture and character of the surrounding area - and how it can be presented in distinct styles.
The five participating artists are as follows:
- Lucy Burgess (Woodsmoor)
- David Chandler
- Eric Jackson (Cale Green)
- Kate O'Brien (Edgeley)
- Jackie Wagg (Offerton)
Cllr Mark Hunter, leader of Stockport Council, said: "Stockport has such a rich cultural and artistic history, which we have been showcasing with pride during our tenure as Greater Manchester Town of Culture.
"It will be fantastic to see the work of local Stockport artists featured in the Stockport Rising exhibition and for people to see our borough highlighted so prominently in their works, reflecting both the urban landscape and stunning countryside vistas the area has to offer."
