Here are some of the Remembrance events taking place in Stockport in a few weeks' time.

One of the main events is the civic ceremony at Stockport War Memorial Art Gallery from 11am on both Remembrance Sunday (10 November) and Armistice Day (11 November).

However, there will be other events taking place across the borough throughout the day.

Stockport Council said there may be some temporary road closures while events are taking place.

Remembrance Sunday (10 November)

  • Stockport: One of the borough's main events will be the ceremony and procession in Stockport town centre. From 10.25am, a procession of service and civilian units will travel from the Armoury to the War Memorial Art Gallery. There will also be a civic procession from the Town Hall to the art gallery from 10.45am. At 11am, there will be a two-minute silence, followed by a civic act of remembrance and the laying of wreaths.
  • Bramhall: There will be a procession from Holland Road to Bramhall War Memorial at 10.40am. Following this will be a service at the War Memorial from 11am, followed by a procession to St Michael and All Angels Parish Church on St Michaels Avenue, via Bramhall Lane South and Robins Lane.
  • Bredbury: There will be a service from 3pm at the War Memorial on George Lane.
  • Cheadle: At 10.30am, a parade will assemble at the junction of Massie Street and High Street, proceeding along the latter to the War Memorial, where there will be a service from 10.50am.
  • Cheadle Hulme: A parade will meet at Beech Road at 9.40am, which will then depart to the War Memorial at 9.55am. There will be a service at the memorial from 10am.
  • Compstall: An assembly at St Paul's Church starts from 10.50am, for remembrance, prayers, and the laying of wreaths.
  • Gatley: An act of Remembrance and laying of wreaths takes place from 10.55am at the Gatley Green memorial.
  • Hazel Grove: A parade from Hazel Grove train station starts at 10.30am, finishing at the London Road War Memorial for a ceremony at 10.45am.
  • Heald Green: A service and laying of wreaths takes place at the Long Lane memorial from 12noon.
  • Heaton Mersey: A service takes place from 10.45am at St John's Church. There will also be an act of remembrance at the war memorial from 11am.
  • Heaton Moor: A service takes place from 10.45am at St Paul's Church. There will also be an act of remembrance at the war memorial from 11am.
  • Heaton Norris: A service takes place from 10.30am at Christ with All Saints Church, Heaton Norris.
  • High Lane: A service takes place from 10am at St Thomas' Parish. There will also be an act of remembrance 11am, along with laying of wreaths at the war memorial.
  • Marple: Standard bearers will assemble at 10.15am at the War Memorial Park - following this will be a laying of wreaths at the War Memorial at 10.30am.
  • Mellor: A service and laying of wreaths takes place at the War Memorial from 12.15pm.
  • Reddish: A service at St Mary's Church starts at 10.30am. Following this, there will be a service at the Cenotaph on Reddish Road at 12.50pm, which proceeds to Willow Grove cemetery from 1pm. Another service will then take place at the Cross of Sacrifice at 1.10pm.
  • Romiley: An assembly starts from the Duke of York public house at 2.30pm. From 2.45pm, there will be prayers at the Romiley war memorial, then at 2.55pm the assembly will proceed to the George Lane memorial in Bredbury, where there will be another service at 3pm.
  • Woodford: From 10.45am there will be a service and the laying of wreaths at Christ Church, Chester Road.

Armistice Day (11 November)

There will also be a service in Stockport town centre at the War Memorial Art Gallery. From 11am, Mayor of Stockport Cllr Suzanne Wyatt will lead a two-minute silence on the steps of the War Memorial Art Gallery.

Speaking of both the Sunday service, Cllr Wyatt said: "On Remembrance Sunday we remember the sacrifices made by men and women across the continents to free the world from the tyranny that threatened us all.

"Please, if you can, join us at 11am on Sunday, 10 November 2024 at Stockport War Memorial Art Gallery for a service of remembrance where we can remember all the Stopfordians who contributed to the final victory.

"If you cannot join us, take a moment at 11am to consider these words of the Kohima Epitaph: 'Tell Them of Us and Say, For Your Tomorrow, We Gave Our Today.'"
