Hundreds more apartments could be built in Stockport if plans for two new residential blocks get the green light.

The £70m town-centre scheme, involving the demolition of the derelict Victoria House office building on Wellington Street by Piccadilly roundabout, has been submitted to the council for approval. The buildings would range from eight to 20 stories tall with a total of 245 homes – with plans for rooftop growing spaces and community facilities on the ground floor.

If approved, work is expected to begin in Summer 2025, with completion planned for June 2027. The apartments would be a mix of one, two and three bedrooms on the development site which includes the Fletcher Street surface car park.

Developed by Progressive Living and managed by Picture This, bosses hope to make their mark on the town centre with the scheme which aims to foster a sense of community in a central location.

David Fairclough, director at Progressive Living, said the firm bought Victoria House six years ago with a "clear vision of the town's potential as a vibrant place to live and invest."

He added: "After collaborating with the council to integrate the two sites, we are excited to play a key role in Stockport's growth story and its continued economic success."

The plan includes some homes suitable for wheelchair users designed to create a 'high quality' and 'age inclusive' urban development, according to Shannon Conway, co-founder of Picture This.

She added: "Delivering a customer-focused design was essential to ensure we bring the right homes to Stockport town centre. This scheme reflects extensive market research, community engagement, resident feedback, and input from an external design review panel."

Passivhaus low energy principles have informed the design and layout of the apartments, which is 'prioritising sustainability' with a focus on enhancing the surrounding neighbourhood and community.

The scheme was able to secure brownfield grant funding from the Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA) to help finance the work.

Cllr Colin Macalister, Stockport's regeneration lead, welcomed the investment and chance to continue the town's regeneration story.

He said: "It's great news to see this development moving forward, with plans to transform an underused car park into much-needed, high-quality homes right in the heart of Stockport.

"Over the next decade, Stockport will set new standards for town centre living with modern housing, improved transport links, and new public spaces, raising the bar for what people can expect from town centre living."
