By-elections in two council wards will be taking place this week.
On Thursday 17 October, residents of Cheadle West & Gatley and Bredbury Green & Romiley will go to the polls to elect one new councillor for each ward.
It comes after Tom Morrison (Cheadle West) and Lisa Smart (Bredbury Green) stepped down from their roles at Stockport Council, shortly after they were elected as Lib Dem MPs for Cheadle and Hazel Grove respectively.
Mr Morrison and Ms Smart said the time constraints they faced as MPs made it unviable for them to continue in their council roles.
Each council ward has three councillors, so these resignations have left two out of three councillors in Cheadle West & Gatley and Bredbury Green & Romiley.
All of the incumbent councillors in both wards are Lib Dems.
The current makeup of the 63 council seats, factoring in the vacancies, is as follows:
- Lib Dem (28)
- Labour (23)
- Edgeley Community Association (3)
- Green (3)
- Independent Ratepayers (3)
- Independent (1)
- VACANT (2)
The councillors standing for the vacant seats are as follows:
Bredbury Green & Romiley
- Papa Andoh-Kweku (Labour)
- Pat Bentley (Conservative)
- Rachel Bresnahan (Lib Dem)
- Stephanie Wyatt (Green)
Cheadle West & Gatley
- Alexander Drury (Green)
- Dan Farley (Labour)
- Michael Fox (Conservative)
- Huma Khan (Lib Dem)
Residents of these wards can cast their votes from 7am - 10pm on Thursday 17 October. You can find your nearest polling station HERE.
