With Wimbledon having drawn to a close, it is timely that the tennis courts at Torkington Park have been renovated and reopened.

In a busy ceremony, Mayor of Stockport Cllr Graham Greenalgh officially reopened the courts alongside Cllr Grace Baynha, cabinet member for parks, highways, and recreation. 40 tennis-playing residents also attended, inaugurating the courts with some first games.

The new courts feature increased accessibility, along with new gate-access technology and booking systems. There will also be a range of activities including local tennis leagues, free weekly organised park tennis sessions for all ages, playing levels and experience (with equipment provided), and more.

The renovations have been managed and partly funded by the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA). Funding was also provided by Stockport Council and the UK Government.

This partnership has seen £576,000 of investment across seven of Stockport's public parks. The investment forms part of the biggest investment in tennis facilities in parks across Britain, with millions going towards transforming over 2000 courts.

Completed projects elsewhere in Stockport include Heaton Moor Park, North Reddish Park and Cale Green Park. Ongoing renovation at Alexandra Park, Bredbury Recreation Ground and Great Moor park is due for completion by the end of July this year.

Stockport Council says the aim is to "ensure quality facilities are available for the local community".

Court fees will be £4.00 per hour, or £40.00 for a 12 month season ticket which allows access to all keypad access gate courts for 12 months (maximum six hours per week).

Cllr Grace Baynham said: "This partnership with the LTA is vital in providing opportunities for children and adults to get active, delivering significant physical and mental health and wellbeing benefits and supporting our Stockport Moving Together vision.

"With most sites available to play during Wimbledon and beyond, the next generation can be inspired to take to the courts and potentially become the next Liam Broady, Andy Murray or Emma Radacanu."

Julie Porter, Chief Operating Officer at the LTA, also said: "We are delighted to be working with Stockport Council. After months of hard work, we're excited to see park tennis courts across Stockport officially back open to the public and in better shape than ever.

"Public tennis courts are such vital facilities, and we want as many people as possible, of all ages and abilities, to pick up a racket and enjoy playing tennis. Thanks to this investment the sport will be opened up to more players, for years to come."
