Analysis of where new Stockport tram line may go

Based on what we know about existing railway routes and infrastructure, here's some speculation on where a potential Stockport Metrolink route could go (Image - Transport for Greater Manchester)

The headline 'Stockport to get Metrolink' is one that's been written plenty of times, with the proposals being announced and reannounced by politicians of all colours for years. 

But there is reason to believe that, within a month, it will finally be confirmed that Stockport will get the tram.

Newly re-elected mayor Andy Burnham said on Thursday (May 9) morning that "we are about to say more" on Metrolink expansion plans, adding: "What we have is an appraisal.

New Lidl with in-store bakery could open in Stockport

A new Lidl with an in-store bakery could soon open in Stockport, north of the town centre.

Plans for a new Lidl discount foodstore have been proposed as part of a scheme on 111 Wellington Road North in Heaton Norris, which could have up to 98 parking spaces around the site.

The store will include a sales area, warehouse delivery area, chiller room, bakery, manager's office, staff welfare facilities, and customer toilets.

Cheadle Hulme's The Hesketh to re-open as a 'premium local' pub

The Hesketh Pub in Cheadle Hulme will re-open as part of an investment drive by Heineken. 

The beer giant is investing £39m into its Star Pubs & Bars chain, which will pay for refurbishments and upgrades at many of its pubs across the country, including The Hesketh. 

Out of Heineken's 2,400 pubs in the UK, 612 are in line for improvement. Of these, 92 will be receiving 'makeovers'. 

The money will also cover the re-opening of pubs which have previously been closed - the Hesketh falls into this category.

Stockport plumber storms Britain's Got Talent stage

A plumber from Offerton got plaudits from the judges in an appearance on Britain's Got Talent. 

Darren Watson took to the stage for a comedy routine on the talent show, which aired on 27 April. 

He fired through some jokes which had the judges in stitches - Simon Cowell in particular - and finished with four yes votes from the panel.
