Controversial plan to build new homes on historic golf club delayed

A decision on the future of a historic golf club in Stockport was delayed last night (Thursday, December 14) after a disagreement over whether it is surplus to requirements.

Developer Hollins Strategic Land has submitted a planning application to build 278 houses on Gatley Golf Club, which it claims is "not an economically viable operation".

Sport England and England Gold have challenged the claim, stating that there is not "any clear evidence that the golf course is surplus to requirements to meet current and future demand".

The planning officer said no further updates had been provided on the viability of the course.

Bramhall's wonky Christmas tree branded the 'worst in the UK' by locals

Fuming residents have branded Bramhall's wonky Christmas tree the 'worst in the UK'.

The 12ft slender spruce was slammed by locals an "absolute disgrace" after it was planted ahead of Christmas.

Stockport Council said the spruce, which is located on a roundabout, was chosen to "minimise the impact on road users".

And they said the tree, which was planted recently, would benefit the community for "many years to come" once it reached its full potential.

But Zoe Gough, 64, who works at a supermarket facing the tree, said her customers had compared its odd shape to a "pipe cleaner".

Plans for new apartments in historic Stockport town centre building revealed

A developer has shared its plans to create new apartments in a historic building in Stockport town centre.

The Britannia Group, which bought the former Stockport Probation Centre at 19 – 37 High Street in the summer, is proposing to create 45 new homes whilst maintaining the character and height of the original building.

The site was built in 1900 and was used by wholesale grocers C J Preston & Sons before it became the probation office in 1983. The building has been empty since September this year.
