Stockport town centre experienced its busiest Sunday in four years last weekend, as the Spectacular Sunday event took place in the town centre.

According to figures released by event organisers, the event saw visitor numbers increase by 56%, across the town, making it the town's busiest Sunday on record since 2019.

The event was organised by Global Groovers, and featured no less than 60 shows and 220 artists throughout the town centre, from Market Place to Merseyway. Both new visitors and locals alike turned out to catch music, dancing, gymnastics, giant roaming puppets, and much more.

Mr Wilson's Second Liners brought the style and the groove outside Market Hall; troupes of Santas played silver band; comedy duo Granny Turismo tottered around the town centre on shopping carts; the event, in sum, was nothing short of a Pennine carnival.

New college and housing development proposed for Cheadle Road

The proposed development would see new buildings for Cheadle College, the demolition of the old college, and new houses in its place (Image via planning document)

Plans for a new college and housing development in Cheadle Hulme remain under discussion.

The proposals would see a new £27 million building complex for Cheadle College, on the site of an informal sports pitch just north of the existing site. Once the new college is built, the old site would be demolished, and 32 new houses built in its place.

Proposals were submitted to Stockport Council in July of this year - however, amendments, consultee comments and reports have continued to take place this month.

A planning statement argued that the goal is to "create a college that will be regarded as one of the finest nationally in the further education sector" and provide an "inspirational learning environment".

New bar and eatery opening in Stockport Underbanks

Work continues in earnest as Stanley's prepares for opening on 1 December (Image - Alasdair Perry)

Stockport is set to welcome another addition to the iconic Underbanks on December 1.

Stanley's is located beneath the St Petersgate bridge, and will serve pizzas, fries, fried chicken, and bar snacks.

Visitors can also expect a wide range of drinks: cocktails, beers, spirits, and more.

Stanley's is the latest in a string of exciting new openings in the Underbanks. In just a few months, for example, SJS Smith Jewellery and Alfredo's Social have opened within a few metres of one another. Further still, the historic street could be set for a new Caribbean restaurant.
