Stockport Council passes 2024/25 budget

'Balance' seems to be the key word in Stockport Town Hall when it comes to the 2024/25 budget. 

At a time of high inflation, energy costs, and increasing demand for services, the council has had to bridge a funding gap of around £11.6m, with "further significant savings needed in the coming years". 

With this in mind, the 2024/25 budget - passed yesterday evening at a town hall meeting - includes a 4.99% council tax rise, reduced green bin collections, introduction of some parking charges, and changes to staffed hours at libraries. 

However, Cllr Jilly Julian, budget lead, said the proposals remained 'ambitious', and council leader Mark Hunter similarly emphasised that Stockport did not face bankruptcy.

Stockport ranked among best places to live in England and Wales

You may have heard recently that Marple ranked 15th in the best places to live in England and Wales.

The town placed in a 'top 20 best places to live' list produced by Garrington Property Finders, a national estate agent. 

However, as well as choosing a top 20, Garrington also produced a comprehensive ranking of 1429 locations in England and Wales - so how did the rest of Stockport fare?

Opening date announced for Stockport's new travel interchange

Transport for Greater Manchester has announced that Stockport's new travel interchange will open on March 17 2024 (Image - TfGM)

Buses will start running from Stockport Interchange next month, Transport for Greater Manchester has announced.

From 17 March, passengers will be able to access the interchange from entrances on Mersey Square, Swaine Street and Daw Bank. On this day, Heaton Lane bus station will close and services will move to the new interchange.

Further still, the rooftop park will open the following day on March 18, allowing access to the interchange via lifts and stairs. The park could also include an events space.

The council gave the green light for a new housing development on land off Melford Road in 2019 but the scheme stopped abruptly when a company working on the project went bust in February 2022.

Stockport Homes has now managed to get the project back up and running.
