Stockport's music scene will soon celebrate an important anniversary.

Wednesday 18 September will mark one year since the first 'Jam Soup' jam night was launched at the Spinning Top.

In that short span, a crowd of regulars and a wonderful culture of improvisation has blossomed.

Jam Soup runs once every two weeks. It features a company of friendly musicians, a range of instruments, and an open invitation to all attendees to get up on stage and have a jam.

Regular jam night attendees will be familiar on some level with this setup, however the atmosphere at Jam Soup is quite unique.

Organisers Dan and Martha have drawn on their experiences of other jam and open mic nights in London, distilled them, and brought them to the Pennine foothills.

The result is a friendly, open-minded night of music.

The emphasis is not on one-upping the other people on stage, nor is it about running through well-known songs. Rather, this event tries to capture the magic of making music on the hoof. What's more, it aims to be as friendly as possible to beginners.

"There's nothing like playing live with other people", says Dan, and it is certainly true that many famous musicians learned their chops from live improvisation.

Like learning a language, being forced to think on the fly is the best way of improving - Jam Soup offers the best possible environment to do so, with regular rotations and a host of players with varying influences and skills, all set within the warm, pressure-free atmosphere of Stockport's very own Spinning Top.

So, if you're learning an instrument and looking for the chance to try your hand at playing live in a company of friendly, like-minded musicians, look no further than Jam Soup.

Stay tuned to the Jam Soup Instagram page HERE for updates on the next night.
