Police seize over 100 offroad bikes as part of crackdown on 'hotspot' areas
Greater Manchester Police have seized more than 100 offroad motorbikes as part of a dedicated operation.
In 100 days, police seized 104 bikes and made 33 arrests in Stockport, Rochdale, Bolton, Oldham and Wigan - all of which were considered 'hotspot' areas.
Reasons for the seizures varied; some bikes had no insurance, others were being driven in an anti-social manner, and some were suspected of being stolen.
Police said anti-social use of the bikes causes 'misery' in communities, and can cause serious - sometimes fatal - road traffic collisions.
The vehicles are also being used to commit further crime, including robbery and drug supply.
Detective Chief Inspector Rick Thompson was therefore "really pleased" to seize more than 100 'problem' bikes.
"When this operation was launched, we made a commitment to crackdown on these sorts of incidents which have plagued our streets for many years now", he said.
"Our work is not done, we will continue to monitor these hotspot areas and take action when needed.
"I would like to thank the public for their help, for the information they have provided either during live incidents or post-incident. Their assistance has been fantastic, and we would not have been able to get as many bikes off the roads without them playing their part."
Police also encouraged residents to report anti-social and / or criminal use of offroad bikes. You can do so by reporting online, or by calling Greater Manchester Police on 101, or 999 in an emergency. Alternatively, you can also call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
