The regeneration of Stockport Underbanks continues in earnest, as construction begins on a new block of apartments in the town centre.
This particular development is on Churchgate - opposite the St Mary's Church car park - and will comprise 50 residential apartments, as well as commercial space on the ground floor.
Of the 50 apartments, 40 would be single-bed, six would be two-bed, and four would be studio apartments.
The space on the ground floor will be of 'flexible' use; this could involve a range of commercial spaces, except a restaurant.
The apartment 'block' might be more accurately described as two blocks of connected buildings with varying roof heights, although both would have four storeys.
One block would front Churchgate, the other would front Harvey Street.
The development would be 'car-free', but would have cycle storage. It also includes a rooftop terrace, a residents' park, and a 'pocket park' adjacent to the Churchgate car park.
The palette of materials would reflect the character of this historic part of the town; this includes red brick, stone detailing, and painted timber.
The development aims to comply with the National Planning Policy Framework, part of which states: "Planning policies and decisions should help create the conditions in which businesses can invest, expand and adapt.
"Significant weight should be placed on the need to support economic growth and productivity, taking into account both local business needs and wider opportunities for development."
