Picturesque railway stations across Stockport borough have swept the board at the Cheshire 'Best Kept Station' awards.

Brinnington, Heaton Chapel, Marple, Romiley and Rose Hill all picked up accolades at the ceremony on Tuesday 12 March.

The awards include a number of different categories, rewarding stations for everything from quality of staffing to flower displays.

Cheshire is the only county to have a 'best kept station' awards ceremony - although Cheshire is admittedly a slight misnomer, given that Stockport and Greater Manchester stations also feature.

The stations which did Stockport proud - and their categories - are as follows:

  • Brinnington - Best Staffed Station award
  • Heaton Chapel - Transport for Greater Manchester award
  • Marple - Community Rail Network Award for Community Engagement
  • Romiley - King's Coronation Award
  • Rose Hill - In Bloom Award

Further afield, Disley picked up the sustainability prize, and Handforth also earned a best staffed station award.

All of Stockport's winning stations are operated by Northern.

Craig Harrop, regional director for Northern, said: "I'd like to congratulate all my colleagues and the volunteer groups at stations across Cheshire that were recognised at the awards last week.

"Their commitment to excellence in terms of the presentation, operation and overall customer experience of their stations is remarkable and the awards are a great opportunity to highlight their hard work."

Mark Barker, chair of Cheshire Best Kept Stations, was similarly enthusiastic.

He said: "What volunteers do is amazing; the passion, commitment, ingenuity, resourcefulness and sheer hard work has improved your stations for passengers, the community, the railway and for yourselves.

"Please keep on doing what you are doing!"
