The iconic Stockport Pyramid could be set for a transformation into an Indian restaurant and banqueting hall.
So far, the award-winning Indian restaurant chain Royal Nawaab has confirmed being at an 'advanced stage' in talks to secure the building as its 'next home in the North West'.
The chain currently operates two eateries in London, having closed its famous banqueting hall in Levenshulme earlier this year.
Royal Nawaab owner Mahboob Hussain told the Manchester Evening News in a statement: "At this stage, I am unable to say anything other than that Royal Nawaab is indeed considering the Pyramid as its next home in the north west.
"Our focus is on continually exploring exciting opportunities that align with our vision and values. We are dedicated to delivering exceptional experiences to our customers and contributing positively to the local community.
"As soon as there are concrete developments to share, we will be pleased to provide you with further information."
Royal Nawaab's Levenshulme restaurant featured a buffet and banqueting hall offering cuisine from the Indian sub-continent, and has been described as 'as much a part of the UK's Halal restaurant scene as any other' by premier Halal food news site Feed the Lion.
After 20 years in operation, the former cinema changed hands in January 2023 and is now occupied by Indian restaurant Merzee.
The Pyramid, on the other hand, has been empty for five years, after Co-op left the building in 2018 to relocate to NOMA in Manchester. In 2019, the building was purchased by Eamar Developments UK.
It was planned as the 'singature' pyramid among a number of other smaller ones along the Mersey valley.
Ultimately, only the one iconic Yew Street building was completed after the developers went into administration. It was repossessed and financed by the Co-op, who occupied it from 1995.
Thus far, it is unclear whether the restaurant would operate under a similar style to its Levenshulme predecessor.
