Saturday 15 July will see the welcome return of Hazel Grove Carnival, featuring a parade, stalls, a dog show, and more.

As usual, the carnival will comprise a traditional parade, starting at the Highfield Road shops at 12pm. The procession follows through the Valley Estate in Hazel Grove, and then up Commercial Road to the A6. From the A6 it then finishes at Torkington Park at the 'Big Fun-Day'.

The theme for this year's parade is 'kings and queens, princesses and dragons'. Those who wish to enter the procession can find a submission form HERE.

In the past, parades have included fancy dress, steam engines, floats from local businesses, and more. People can enter to promote their business or community event, or simply for fun.

After the parade, the fun-day at Torkington Park will feature a funfair, stalls, food, drink, music, a dog show and more.

Hazel Grove carnival has its origins in the early 1900s. The earliest reference is found in a newspaper article from 1910, which describes a 'fancy dress parade and sports' that took place in Hazel Grove on August Bank Holiday.

The festival grew throughout the 1920-30s, with more elaborate floats and costumes. Suspended during the Second World War, the carnival resumed in 1946 and since then has run almost every year, barring a few exceptions in the 1970s and '80s.

A description on the Hazel Grove Carnival website reads: "Over the years, the carnival has evolved to include a range of activities and events, such as live music, a funfair, a beer tent, and various stalls selling food, drinks, and crafts.

"The highlight of the carnival is the procession, which features floats decorated by local organizations, schools, and businesses, as well as marching bands, dancers, and performers.

"Today, the Hazel Grove Carnival remains a much-loved tradition and a key event in the local calendar, attracting thousands of visitors from across the region."

Entry is free for this event - simply turn up, watch the procession, and enjoy the fun-day!
