Police officers have been helping local youngsters safeguard their bikes, phones, and more.

Officers from the neighbourhood policing team have been sharing different tools to protect property, including high-quality bike locks, as well as bike and mobile phone marking systems.

In events at Brinnington Park, Lancashire Hill and Alexandra Park, officers registered bikes with The National Cycle Database free of charge, with the aim of reducing the chances of local youngsters becoming victims of bicycle theft.

Police will also be at at Decathlon in Stockport on Saturday 3 May from 10am-12pm, and at Go Outdoors on Stockport Road, Cheadle Heath, from 11am-1pm on Sunday 4 May, giving out further advice.

Inspector Martin Baker, who has secured the funding for the bike marking, said: "A big part of our role working with our communities is making sure people's property is safe.

"Registering a bike on the national BikeRegister database means you could be reunited with your bike in the event of it being stolen, but it does not help make it a hard target to thieves.

"There are a number of ways to reduce the chances of you becoming a victim of cycle theft including using locks with a high-security rating; securing both the frame and wheels; secure your bike in a well-lit area."
