A Stockport NHS team dedicated to helping patients manage their pain has received a national award 'in recognition and support of their innovative approach'.

The Stockport Pain Management Team has won an award for its 'Your Pain Journey' project, aimed at improving access to effective pain management for both patients and clinicians.

Stockport NHS Foundation Trust says that the project will benefit around 36,000 people in Stockport who live with moderate to severe pain.

The Trust added: "Your Pain Journey aims to inform and educate, promoting self-care and self-management and empowering people to make informed choices about the best management of their pain."

The Pain Management Team is "a multidisciplinary team consisting of medical and nursing staff, supported by physiotherapy and psychology professionals", aimed at involving patients in learning to self-manage their pain and the effect it has on quality of life.

The award for the project was granted by Q, a community of thousands of people across the UK and Ireland, collaborating to improve the safety and quality of health and care.

Q aims to help share ideas and provide support for the latest in innovative health projects, and will be helping to fund the 'Your Pain Journey' project with a £39,000 donation.

The Pain Management Team is currently working with patients, carers and stakeholders to obtain their input and feedback into providing a service which will suit their needs. The service improvements and changes are planned to be implemented for patients next year.

Dr David Crabtree, Consultant with the Stockport Pain Management Team, said: "We are very excited to have won money to help us create 'Your Pain Journey' alongside our patients.

"Together we will make Stockport Pain Management a modern, adaptable service that fits the needs of those in Stockport and surrounding areas living with pain."
