Stockport MP says Keir Starmer should set out timetable to leave
By Alasdair Perry 11th May 2026
Stockport MP Navendu Mishra has said prime minister Keir Starmer should out a timetable to leave.
Speaking on the today programme this morning (Monday 11 May), Mr Mishra suggested the PM set out "a timetable for an orderly transition", and allow other Labour party figures to 'put forward their vision'.
When interviewer Nick Robinson asked about the possibility of Andy Burnham and Angela Rayner, Mr Mishra praised both.
"I think the prime minister should really understand the situation", the Stockport MP said. "How difficult it is for people in northern communities, the Midlands, and London [...]
"The prime minister should set out a timetable for an orderly transition.
"One of the reasons people got fed up with the previous was the constant chaos, consistent mismanagement that we saw. I don't think we want that to be repeated.
"What we need is a timely timetable to make sure that the best people that could lead the Labour party have the time to put forward their vision."
When asked about Andy Burnham, Mr Mishra said: "I think he has done some really good things in my constituency of Stockport and in Greater Manchester.
"And he has the experience of a previous Labour government - having served in senior roles, including the cabinet."
And, speaking of Angela Rayner, he said: "If you look at her achievements coming from Stockport, as a shop-floor trade unionist, are phenomenal.
"When she was the housing secretary - I mean, in my constituency, the single biggest issue is housing. And the renters' rights act fundamentally shifts the dynamic on that issue."
Keir Starmer is today giving a speech trying to convince Labour MPs to back him, saying he will 'prove doubters wrong'.
