Stockport received some welcome validation as it finished in The Times' list of best places to buy a first home in the UK.

The town was praised for its 'funky' character, independent shops and eateries, strong connections (to Manchester, London, and the Peak District), and a huge investment programme.

Certainly, Stockport's £1 billion investment programme - incorporating Weir Mill, the Stockport 8 development, and more - was singled out as "Stockport's change of fortunes."

Nor is this the first time that Stockport has caught the attention of The Times. In an article in March, Jayne Dowle said with light sardonicism: "This is where the avocado-brunching millennials move when they have a Lejoux pushchair and are faced with the school run, but still want to live a fashionable life."

The average house price in Stockport stands at £374,100, whilst the average price for a two-bedroom property is £240,000.

Also on the list this year was Prestwich, Liverpool, and Coventry.

The Times compiles a similar list each year, along with other 'listicles' such as 'best places to live by the sea'.
