Four local heroes in Stockport have been recognised in the 2026 New Year Honours list.

The list, decided by King Charles III and the government, recognises the achievements and service of extraordinary people across the UK.

Without further ado, here are the Stockport residents who have been recognised:

Julia Fawcett OBE was named a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) as a result of her work as Chief Executive Officer of the Lowry theatre.

Julia said: "I am so proud of everything we have built together at Lowry.

"Culture is always a collective effort, and I share this honour with our wonderful team, our brilliant artists, and the audiences and communities who inspire us every day."

Phillip Gould-Bourn was named a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in honour of his services to Cheadle. Phillip leads the Cheadle Civic Society, protecting Cheadle's historic heritage and character.

Bernard Stevens was also named an MBE for his services to the Kinder Mountain Rescue Team (KMRT) and to young people in Greater Manchester. For fifty years he's helped to rescue injured hikers.

His colleagues at the KMRT said: "Bernie's MBE is a fitting recognition of a lifetime spent helping others on the hills and in the classroom and youth club." Bernard himself insists: "I've never saved a single life—it's always a team effort".

Meanwhile, Mark Whittaker was named a Medallist of the Order of the British Empire for his services to the community in Marple.

Founder of the Marple Website, Mark has been supporting and promoting the Marple community for decades.

Other notable honours this year included the England Lionesses manager Sarina Wiegman, actor Idris Elba, figure skating duo Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean, and comedy actor and writer Meera Syal.
