Research from Stockport Labour Group has revealed that UK government funding for the borough has been cut by 66% since 2010.
The analysis points out that in 2010, Stockport received £99.3m per year in government funding for local services. By today's standards, this is the equivalent of £144.88m in purchasing power. Today, the research says, Stockport receives £49.7m, a reduction of two thirds.
Stockport Labour Group said in a statement: "Even after the Conservatives have forced up council tax in our area by 37%, that still leaves Stockport with a total spending power reduction of 24% – whilst at the same time, places like Wokingham in the South East have been cut by just 2%."
Councillor Christine Carrigan, deputy leader of Stockport Labour Group, has written an open letter to Jeremy Hunt, Chancellor of the Exchequer, calling for 'a fair deal for Stockport'.
Cllr Carrigan said: "Stockport is a proud area, and we have no problem standing on our own two feet – but you are cutting us off at the knees.
"In the light of these figures, you must now offer a fair deal for Stockport. Our area must not be hit harder than other parts of the country."
