With local council elections and a general election both drawing near, Stockport Green Party has updated its manifesto.

One of the group's goals is to push for Stockport to become a pilot area for universal basic income (UBI). UBI would mean all citizens receive a minimum income in the form of an unconditional transfer payment.

Also high on the agenda are building more affordable housing and addressing homelessness.

The Green manifesto also outlines plans to make Stockport carbon neutral by 2030 - eight years sooner than the current target of 2038. Part of this involves transport reform, with plans for more pedestrian and cycle areas and a focus on improving public transport. Another facet of this goal is tree policy and improved biodiversity.

Health and care services, youth services, education and community policing (litter picks, neighbourhood watch), also feature in the manifesto, which can be read in full HERE.

In the upcoming general election, there are three Green MP candidates who will contest Stockport, Hazel Grove and Cheadle - Helena Mellish, Graham Reid, and Alex Drury respectively.

As for the local council elections on 2 May 2024, Cllr James Frizzell is one of 21 local councillors up for re-election in Stockport. Cllrs Liz Crix and Gary Lawson will keep their seats.

The three currently represent the South Reddish ward. Local commitments in the manifesto include opposition to an A6 bypass plan through the Goyt Valley (should that plan be resurrected), and a regular train service from Reddish South station.

Alex Drury will also be standing in the local elections in the Cheadle and Gatley ward.

It comes not long after Cllr Mark Hunter, leader of Stockport Council, outlined his own aims for Stockport in the ensuing months and years.
