Stockport Council 'welcomes' temporary ban on disposable BBQs
By Alasdair Perry 18th Aug 2026
Stockport Council has 'welcomed' the government's temporary ban on disposable barbecues.
The ban - which prohibits the sale of disposable barbecues in shops - came into effect across Britain on Friday 14 August.
The council described the move as an 'important step' in reducing the risk of wildfires in hot weather.
It comes not long after Prime Minister Andy Burnham described Britain as a 'tinderbox' owing to the hot weather and dry conditions this summer.
Disposable barbecues are already banned in Stockport's parks and open spaces, as are fire pits, fireworks, sky lanterns, and open flames.
Cllr Dan Oliver, cabinet member for communities, culture and public protection at Stockport Council, said: "We welcome the government's decision to introduce a temporary ban on the sale of disposable barbecues during this period of extreme weather.
"The recent wildfires seen across the country have highlighted how quickly fires can spread in hot, dry conditions and the devastating impact they can have on communities, wildlife and the environment.
"Our parks and green spaces are among Stockport's greatest assets, and we want people to enjoy them safely. Supporting measures that help reduce the risk of accidental fires is an important part of protecting these valued places."
The government has said it will keep the temporary ban under review.
